Meet the crew - U10 Jason Melo
A life-long resident of Windsor–Essex County, Jason grew up playing minor hockey in Essex before advancing to ‘AAA’ hockey at an early age. He continued through various levels of junior hockey, including time in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), ultimately completing his playing career with the University of Windsor Lancers from 2000–2004, where he earned recognition as a four-time Academic All-Canadian.

Jason holds a D1 coaching certification and has coached competitive youth hockey—both OMHA and OWHA—at multiple levels since 2020. He is a passionate, detail-oriented coach who prioritizes skill development, continuous improvement, and disciplined team play. His coaching style is simple, structured, and built on the principle of outworking opponents every time his team steps on the ice. He takes pride in establishing clear expectations and helping young athletes grow not only as players, but as confident, accountable individuals.

Jason’s passion for the game extends beyond coaching. He is the President and co-owner of the Leamington Flyers Jr. “A” Hockey Club, where he was instrumental in the franchise’s graduation to Junior “A” status and in securing the expansion rights that brought Junior “A” hockey to the Windsor–Essex region. Under his leadership, the Flyers have captured a GOJHL Sutherland Cup Championship and quickly established themselves as a premier junior hockey program, graduating numerous players to the CHL, NCAA Division I, U SPORT and professional levels.

He is also the co-owner of Powertech Hockey, the region’s longest-standing and leading hockey development company. With a 20-year history in Windsor–Essex, Powertech has become a cornerstone of elite player development, producing athletes who have advanced to junior, collegiate, and professional ranks, including the NHL.  Its longevity and reputation reflect Jason’s commitment to high-performance training and long-term athlete success.

U10 players can expect a structured and competitive environment where Coach Jay emphasizes strong fundamentals, consistent effort, and personal accountability. Practices are designed to support age-appropriate skill development with a focus on skating, agility, puck control, and decision-making—helping players build confidence and hockey IQ. Athletes will be encouraged to compete, work hard, and challenge themselves while learning disciplined habits and teamwork.

Players who are committed, coachable, and willing to put in the work are encouraged to attend tryouts and compete for a spot in a structured, high-level program dedicated to developing talent while keeping competitive hockey affordable and accessible to those prepared to earn it.
